When you first start out to make a website you will need a domain and a hosting account.

How to purchase a domain name and hosting

If you are serious about setting up your own website, the first step is to get your own domain name. The domain name is what people will type in the search bar to find your website.

Such as:
To find the Yahoo webpage you type in www. Yahoo.com
To find the google webpage you type in the search bar www.google.com
To find the Facebook webpage you type in the search bar www.facebook.com

So it will be with your domain name.
Whatever domain you choose will be the name people will type in the search bar to find your website.

Example:
If you chose “mywebsite” as your domain name, then people will type www.mywebsite.com in the search bar to find your website.

What are the benefits of having your own domain name?

Having your own domain name gives your website credibility.
Helps people to remember your business or Church site and return often.
If you ever decide to change your webhost you can keep your domain name
If you are interesting in having sponsor your own domain name is helpful
Having your own domain name helps you to get on pages like google, yahoo, and bing. So if someone is searching your site in one these search engines, having your own domain name helps you to get ranked here.
How much does it cost to register your own domain name?

Domain names can range from $8.99 to $15.00 dollars a year. Some hosting companies include a FREE domain name with their services.

Domain names can end with either .com, .org, .net, .biz, and on and on. Each ending has a different price with .com being the popular and expensive.

Side Note: Keep in mind, if you sign up for a cheap domain name, they may try and boost the price up on you the following year. Make sure to do your research before you commit to purchasing a domain name
If you would like my recommendations for a domain name, I use iPage.com

Where can I purchase a domain name?

The first place that I will recommend and that I actually use for my web hosting for my websites is www.iPage.com. It is only $1.99 a month and if you sign up for their hosting service, they will include a domain name for FREE. They also give your tools like Weebly to help you make a website completely free..

The other place I would recommend is www.hostgator.com both are very good companies and these would be my personal recommendations.

I would recommend purchasing your domain name and web hosting at the same time and from the same company. It makes the set up process of your website so much easier and the activation time is much quicker.

Let me walk you through that set up process using the place where I host my website. I will be using iPage, but it is pretty much the same with all webhosting companies.
